Public liability insurance
The University is protected by public liability insurance. This insurance covers the University's legal liability to pay compensation in respect of:
- Bodily injury to a third party
- Damage to property
happening during the period of insurance, caused by an occurrence or accident within the geographical limits, and in connection with the University and its products.
This insurance also covers students “under the direction or control of the University …. whilst undertaking any activity approved, requested or recognised by the University”. Such may include practical training both on or off campus including, practical placement, enterprise / work experience and field assignments.
The geographic limits for this insurance are:
- Anywhere in the Commonwealth of Australia
- Elsewhere in the world but only in respect of liability to students whilst engaged in activities approved by the University.
This policy excludes injury or damage arising from the use of a motor vehicle.
In the event of a person being involved in an accident and/or suffering an injury, on campus or other University premises, but excluding ‘normal on-field’ sports injuries as contemplated under the Macquarie University Sports and Recreation (MUSR) policy, an OH&S Accident & Injuries form must be completed.
The original of the form should be sent to the OH&S Officer, with a copy to the Insurance Officer in case of a potential insurance claim (except workers compensation incidents).
