Sources of funds
Macquarie University 's core teaching and research activities are funded from annual allocations from the Operating Fund Budget. The income sources of this fund are broadly four areas:
- Annual Operating Grants from the Federal Government (DEEWR)
- Contribution from fee-paying programs
- Contribution from investment income
- Other income and recoveries.
Each year the Federal Government supplies the University with an operating grant.
This grant is calculated and supplied by DEEWR (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations). This grant includes the Institutional Grants Scheme (IGS) and the Research Training Scheme (RTS).

From 2002 the Research Quantum and the ARC small Grants Scheme were combined to form the Institutional Grants Scheme. The University has undertaken to maintain the level of funding towards Research by increasing the allocation to the Research Committee by an amount equivalent to the funding previously allocated by DETYA to the ARC Small Grants Scheme. The balance of the Institutional Grants Scheme (IGS) (formerly the Research Quantum) is allocated to the Departments which earn it in its entirety. There is no longer a Research Quantum. However, the University will distribute this allocation on the same basis as the IGS is calculated by DEEWR.
